Salt in Wounds

Published: October 18th 2026 (week 42 of 2026) in rpg

A fantasy setting centered around a city that is an "economic powerhouse fueled by centuries of perpetual butchery of an unkillable regenerating giant monster". As far as fantasy settings go it is not obscenely ridiculous.

The titular Salt in Wounds is a city built on top of a giant, immortal, unkillable, and constantly regenerating monster. The inhabitants of the city harvest the infinite supply of monster-derived materials for profit. The blood spilled in the process is poisoning the land around the city, and slowly turning it into a toxic, hostile swamp.

A tradition of ecology-based settings

Final Fantasy VII has its mako ie, the life-force of the planet that the evil Shinra corporation turns into electricity, destroying the planet's ecosystem in the process. It is one of the best games ever developed.

The whole Dark Sun setting is built on the premise of magic being damaging to the environment, and is one of the coolest settings ever published.

Salt in Wounds has the giant unkillable monster whose unending harvest will inexorably result in the destruction of nature.

I think all of these settings share a similar theme: exploitation of natural resources pushed to the extreme.

Salt in Wounds just makes the theme a lot more personified, if you can call it that, focusing the exploitation on a single creature, not the world as a whole. It is a bit too much on the weird side for me, but nonetheless interesting.
